Zainab Aliyu has arrived Nigeria on Monday, May 13, after she was freed by the Saudi Arabia government.
Recall that the Nigerian student was arrested for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia and later released after intervention by the federal government of Nigeria.
The situation had also led to widespread protest and condemnation.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Nigeria's foreign affairs ministry said on Thursday, May 2, that its silent diplomatic efforts culminated in the release of Zainab Aliyu and Ibrahim Abubakar arrested by Saudi authority for drug related offence.
Legit.ng learnt that the ministry said in a statement by its acting spokesperson, Friday Akpan, in Abuja that: "Zainab Aliyu, a Nigerian student who travelled for Lesser Hajj with her mother was arrested by Saudi security officials on December 26, 2018, in a hotel in Madinah. She was accused of possessing a bag containing illicit drug purportedly bearing a tag with her name.
“Another passenger, Ibrahim Abubakar, unrelated to Zainab who also travelled on the same aircraft, was also arrested on the same day.”
