President Muhammadu Buhari has said that university degree will help graduates grapple with the challenges of life rather than just ushering them into paradise.
The Punch reports that the president said this at the 13th Convocation for the conferment of higher degrees, postgraduate diplomas and honorary degrees of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state on Friday, May 10.
The president whose address was read by the minister of state for education, Anthony Anwuka, promised that the government would tackle the problem of youth unemployment and also cited policies in place that are already addressing them.
He said: “You are cautioned that university degrees do not usher you into an El Dorado. It rather equips you with the competence to grapple with the ever-changing challenges of life of which youth unemployment is a vexatious part.
“ The Federal Government will remain undaunted in tackling the challenges of youth unemployment and underemployment through a matrix of initiatives.”
He listed such initiatives to include "N-Power, the Bank of Industry Youth Entrepreneurship Support Programme and the Central Bank of Nigeria and Bank of Agriculture Support Schemes."
Meanwhile, President Buhari said that his administration is committed in building bridges across ethnicity for the sake of the country's unity.
The president spoke on Friday, May 10 when the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors under the aegis of Progressive Governors Forum bestowed an award on him.
