AILM accuses Akwa Ibom APC of planning media assaults on election tribunal, INEC

- A group has accused the Akwa Ibom APC of planning a media assault on the state's election petitions tribunal

- The Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement said the party is also planning to discredit the Independent National Electoral Commission

- The group said it has received an intelligence report that the opposition party has contracted different teams of citizen journalists to do the hatchet job

A socio-political group, Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement (AILM), has accused candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom state, who are challenging the outcome of the general elections, of plans to launch a coordinated media assault on the election petitions tribunal and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group says it is aware of a grand plot by candidates of the party to plant fake news on both print and new media to discredit the tribunal and the election umpire.

Leader of the group, Prince Emmanuel Sam, made the allegation in a press statement sent to Legit.ng on Wednesday May 8.

He said the group has received an intelligence report that the opposition party has contracted different teams of citizen journalists to do the hatchet job.

His words: “The respective teams are working for different candidates of the party. Their mandate is to create and circulate stories to discredit INEC and the PDP, and plant indicting reports against the tribunal as though they are sponsored by the PDP.

“Our Intel shows that Mr. Nsima Ekere, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Hon. Emmanuel Akpan and virtually all candidates of the APC who are at the tribunal have set up propaganda teams specifically for the tribunal.

“Their job is to flood the public space with lopsided reports on the proceedings of the tribunal, with the aim to stir fear in the people and distort public opinion against the tribunal and the ruling party.”

The group has called on the APC to accept the loss it suffered in the elections in good faith and join hands with the winners of the election to build a virile state where all shades of interests is protected under one leadership.

The group further stated that any Akwa Ibom person who is seeking public office and yet uses his wealth to hire people to cause fear, disharmony and disunity in the state did not have the interest of the the people at heart.

They called on members of the APC who lost the elections and are yet seeking redress at the tribunal, to pursue their cases within the confines of the law and deserving decorum.

The group, however, urges the public to disregard any false alarm that would emanate from the fake media men hired by the Akwa Ibom state chapter of APC, insisting that the outcome of the elections was clearly the wish of Akwa Ibom people.

Meanwhile, senator-elect for Ikot Ekpene senatorial district (Akwa Ibom north-west), Dr. Chris Ekpenyong, has accused former governor Godswill Akpabio, of trying to stampede the state election tribunal in order to obtain a favourable judgement from them.

Speaking in an interview in Uyo, the state capital, over the weekend, Ekpeyong warned Akpabio to stop the campaign of blackmail and intimidation against the duly constituted election tribunal.

He said Akpabio should be charged for contempt “for continuing to stampede the tribunal with a view to forcing it to change the course of justice.”
