President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-nomination of Godwin Emefiele for a second term as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has generated reactions amongst Nigerians.
Emefiele was first appointed by former president Goodluck Jonathan and while many had thought he would be removed by the new administration of Buhari, he was retained.
His tenure as chairman of the apex bank was however expected to end in 2019 and there had been rumours that he would leave for a northerner.
President Buhari, however, in a letter to the National Assembly on Thursday, May 9, reappointed Emefiele for a second term in office which will be expected to end in another five years.
Nigerians took to social media to give their perspective on the development.
While some said this showed the president is not a tribalist as earlier thought, others described the re-appointment as reward for Emefiele’s loyalty to the presidency.
