President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly said that the North East Development Commission (NEDC) is an appreciation of the electoral support for him provided by the region, according to Vanguard.
The president inaugurated the commission on Wednesday, May 9, where he mandated it with rebuilding the Boko Haram-ravaged region.
He said: “You must, therefore, constantly liaise with the relevant federal ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, states and other development partners for the implementation of all programmes and initiatives and proper utilization of funds released for intervention in the zone.”
The president said the inauguration of the NEDC was in fulfillment of the pledge of his administration to the people of the North East Zone and as part of the strategy for regenerating its socio-economic potentials after the devastation of the Boko-Haram insurgency.
“It is, therefore, the expectation of Government and people of the Zone that you will rapidly and systematically set to work to address all areas of your mandates in a fair and equitable manner.
“To demonstrate the commitment of this government to your effective takeoff, a provision of N10 billion has been made in the 2019 budget. It is my expectation that you will judiciously apply these resources.”
Legit.ng had reported that President Buhari on Wednesday, May 8, inaugurated the board of North East Development Commission. This was disclosed in a statement made available on the Facebook page of Aso Rock.
The NEDC was established in 2017, after the bill establishing the commission was passed by the two legislative chambers. Then, on October 25, 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari assented to the bill, then signing it into an Act.
The NEDC is charged with the responsibility to, among other things, receive and manage funds from allocation of the federal account international donors for the settlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of insurgency as well as tackling menace of poverty, illiteracy level, ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the northeast states - Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe.
