Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has accepted that Liverpool were the better side after 4-0 bashing in the semi-final of their Champions League reverse tie.

Divock Origi's brace either side and a double from Georginio Wijnaldum saw Liverpool claim a 4-0 win, to seal a spot for the Madrid final on a 4-3 aggregate, with Barcelona sent packing.

At the last count, only four times has staged a comeback after a deficit of three goals or more from first-leg to progress in a knockout clash.

"They have been really strong, they played really well and they kind of us rolled us over, really," Valverde was quoted as saying to Sky Sports.

"It is a terrible result for our fans and for ourselves but credit is due to Liverpool.

"You're going to suffer, the fans will suffer as well. That's what it is like. We didn't expect a situation like this.

"You have to go through this penitence and we've not got long to go until the end of the league season.

"We've got the cup still to fight for and we've got to really finish the season well on a high after this.

"But at the moment we're blown away, it's terrible,” the manager summed up.

Earlier, reported that Luis Suarez believes his team-mates are to blame for their 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday, May 7, at Anfield that saw them exit the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

Barcelona went into the second leg tie with a three-goal advantage earned from the reverse fixture played at Nou Camp.

They, however, blew up the glorious chance to reach the finals as Liverpool completed a 4-0 dramatic comeback to dump the La Liga giants out of the tournament. ( -> We have updated to serve you better
