Barcelona captain Lionel Messi faces a possible ban for 'punching' Fabinho during their Champion League semi-final first leg tie at Camp Nou after over 5000 Liverpool fans have commenced signing the petition.

According to Give Me Football, the Argentine star lifted his arm and made contact with Fabinho, but claims of a 'punch' - as many supporters of the game have branded it on social media platforms - seem to have been blown out of proportion.

At the last count, Liverpool fans are employing the use of Change.org petition, to ensure the Barcelona playmaker is banned for the 'punch.'

Interestingly, since the creation of the petition channel by the user 'MessiAFraud', over 5,000 signatories and has been directly address to both UEFA and the Champions League.

"So basically Messi gets a free-kick for punching Fabinho in the head and scores it, I feel like this needs to be looked at by UEFA,” the petition read in part.

However, at the other end, some other football fans are planning to strike back against the petition because to them ‘MessiAFraud’ is being used to defend against the 'haters.'

Reacting to criticism on the website, they stressed that the VAR should have been put into use by the referee, which would have helped in clearing any doubts.

"Listen, if this was say, Mo Salah every other fan would call him out on e.g. like against Porto which was not intentional and not able to be sanctioned after the game, in this incident VAR should have been used."

In addition, not everyone is convinced with their argument, but one comment is worth reading.

"Quite possibly the saddest thing I've ever seen. Seriously, get a life you sad sack,” the writer suggested.

And another summarizes his though with the following comment.

"I just wanted to sign so that I could let you all know how utterly embarrassing this is. I'm a Liverpool fan and seeing this moaning nonsense makes me want to puke. Thanks."

Indeed, different views by different folks, but to a large extent the petition does not appear good for Liverpool’s support-base going into the reverse fixture at Anfield next week.

However, if Messi is eventually banned for the game, the Reds supporters will certainly ‘celebrate’ his absence in their numbers.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Referee Bjorn Kuipers has been attacked for giving Barcelona a free kick which Lionel Messi scored in the Catalan's 3-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League.

Liverpool star Fabinho appeared to block off as Luis Suarez and Messi looked to play a one-two in the Reds' half.

It was obstruction by the Brazilian midfielder, but as the Barcelona superstar jumped out of the way, footage shows him throwing his left fist into Fabinho's head.

Eagle-eyed viewers are now convinced according to UK Sun that Barcelona should not have been given a free kick considering what happened.

Lionel Messi was however superb as he scored a fantastic free kick which gave Barcelona the victory in front of their fans.
