The Dialogue Resource Centre has taken a stance on the forthcoming election into Osun state House of Assembly Speakership position.
The group noted that the All Progressives Congress would decide the next Speaker of the house.
They, however, lauded the antecedence of Hon. Timothy Owoeye and hailed his ambition to occupy the position.
While addressing journalists during his visit to Osogbo, the Osun state capital, the convener of the group, Waheed Saka, noted that Hon. Owoeye possesses the needed experience in propelling the legislative arm of the state for effective and efficient lawmaking.
His words: “The position of the Speaker of the House of Assembly is very strategic. It requires years of experience.
“As a socio-political group working for the growth of Osun state, we have watched Honorable Timothy Owoeye’s political trajectory and precedency, we can boldly say that he is the right man for the job.
“Honourable Owoeye is a grassroots politician who understands the need and aspiration of his eminent and his immediate people and this has counted well for him over the years.
“He has remained relevant in the House in terms of bills and motions raised on the floor of the house where he has served as a principal officer for three legislative terms. Such a person with the qualities is needed to pilot the legislative affairs in the state.”
Saka also affirmed his confidence in Owoeye to bring government closer to the people if elected as Speaker come June 2019. He further noted some of the lawmaker's unprecedented qualities and achievement as an active and participatory legislator in the Osun state legislative chamber.
He noted that Hon. Timothy Owoeye in the past years has tremendously gained due loyalty of his political party (All Progressive Congress) as a strong loyalist to the party for more than two decades.
“He, Owoeye, was the only honourable member given whooping amount of money estimated to 40-60 million naira and refunded it back to the state to prove his true servant.
“He is the first politician in the state to be detained in Osun State in 2007 due to intimidation by the then rulling party under the administration of the then governor, Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, but his determination to serve the party wasn't deterred.
“I believe with his antecedence, contribution, progressive factors among others, he deserves to be the next Speaker in the 7th assembly in the Osun state House of Assembly,” he added.
He urged the Osun members-elect to rally round Hon. Owoeye and support his ambition.
Meanwhile, a political group, Sustainable Democracy Agenda (SUDA), has called for open balloting during the election of presiding officers of the 9th National Assembly.
Convener of the group, Malam Ibrahim Usman, stated this in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, April 21 in Abuja.
According to Usman, SUDA had uncovered plot by some principal officers of the present 8th Assembly to manipulate the election in both chambers through the use of secret balloting.
