These are therefore nine proven ways to avoid becoming one of their victims:

1. Verify identities

Yahoo boys or online fraudsters make use of stolen identities to pretend to be what they are not to scam you. Before you engage with anyone online, verify them first to make sure they are who they say they are.

2. Do online findings

Before you go into business or transaction with an organisation, make sure to do online searches on the company's name or include their name in a phrase that includes words like “scam” to see if the business has a history of shady dealings.

3. Avoid paying upfront for a fantasy

Don't respond to any unsolicited email saying you have won a random prize that could only be claimed with an advance payment. Most times, the prizes are too juicy to be true.

4. Stop submitting your card details on every site

In fact, do not on any at all, except you are making a transaction on the site. If you are on a merchant site, make sure the site is secure before you use your card on it. The best way to ascertain the security is to look out for the “s” added to the “http” part of the site’s url in the address bar.

5. Don’t mail your bank pin to anyone

This is one of the ways Yahoo boys use to clear funds out of peoples’ accounts. Your bank will never ask you for your pin via any means.
