Nigeria’s Super Eagles will trade tackle with Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors and Senegal’s Teranga Lions in friendly games ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) next month, claims a report on thenff.com website.
According to the Nigeria football house, the Eagles, who are three-time African champions will commence preparations on June 2 in Asaba, ahead of the clash against Zimbabwe on Saturday, June 8, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
The Gernot Rohr tutored-side will then depart Asaba on a chartered flight for Ismailia, Egypt, where they will commence finally preparation for the biennial tournament.
And on Sunday, June 16, Nigeria will trade tackle with Senegal at the Ismailia Stadium, in their final pre-tournament game.
Reacting on upcoming fixtures on Thursday, May 2, NFF president Amaju Melvin Pinnick stressed that the Super Eagles will be up against one of Africa’s top ranked teams
“We have sealed the matches with the Warriors of Zimbabwe and the Lions of Teranga and these are two matches we are really looking forward to. There cannot possibly be a better way to get into the AFCON spirit than playing the number one –ranked team in Africa just before the finals begin.”
On his part, Senegal’s football chief, Augustine Senghor confirmed the West African nation will play one match before AFCON 2019.
“We shall only have one friendly match against Nigeria as we prepare for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.”
Interestingly, the Eagles’ delegation will head to Alexandria, venue of their Group B games a day after the clash with Senegal.
Nigeria will battle Burundi in their opening game of AFCON 2019 on June 22 before facing Guinea on June 26 and Madagascar on June 30 respectively.
