Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has praised Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for his performance against his side in the Champions League on Wednesday night, May 1.
Lionel Messi was superb for Barcelona at Nou Camp scoring a brace which condemned Liverpool to a 3-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal encounter.
Despite being crowned the winner of the PFA award this season in the Premier League, Virgil Van Dijk was unable to stop Lionel Messi from scoring.
Virgil Van Dijk has now explained that he is glad not to be playing in the Spanish La Liga so that he won't be facing Lionel Messi every season.
“When you come up against Messi and he produces his best form you can't do anything. I'm grateful that I'm not in Spain and I don't have to face him every season.
“He scored two goals and I was very disappointed. He won the battle but not the war,'' Dijk said according to Goal.
Liverpool will now have to up their game in the second leg against Barcelona at Anfield after conceding three goals at Nou Camp.
