Smuggler kills customs officer, injures others in Jigawa

- A car smuggler knocked down and killed a customs officer identified as Tunde Wasiu Abdul’Azez on Palace Road in Gumel local government area

- The yet-to-be-identified suspect reportedly ran over the customs officer who tried to stop him from bringing a contraband vehicle into Nigeria

- Two other officers were also injured after being knocked off a motorcycle with which they gave chase to the escaping smuggler

A suspected vehicle smuggler trying to bring a contraband car into Nigeria has ended up killing a customs officer and injured two others.

Daily Trust reports that the incident occurred on Monday, April 29 in the northern state of Jigawa.

According to the report, the suspected smuggler hit the officers with a car in an attempt to escape arrest along Palace Road in Gumel local government area of Jigawa.

The officer killed was identified as Tunde Wasiu Abdul’Azez. He was knocked down while trying to block the suspect who was said to be driving a Volkswagen Golf car.

The two other officers identified as Usman Abdu and Adda’u Dahiru were knocked off a motorcycle by the suspected smuggler along the road leading to Gumel.

Isa Danbaba, the spokesperson for Kano/Jigawa Customs Area Command, who confirmed the incident, said the smuggler has yet to be identified and no arrest had been made so far.

In a similar vein, Legit.ng reported that Abba Abubakar, a high ranking officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) was on Tuesday, April 9, stung and killed by a swarm of bees in the Ashipa area of Badagry in Lagos state.

Abubakar's death was described by the Nigeria Customs service in Lagos as an irreparable loss

Speaking on Wednesday, April 10, on Abubakar's death, Saidu Abdullahi, the spokesman of the Seme command, said: “With sadness and deep sorrow, the Seme Area Command announces the death of our colleague CSC Abba, A.”
