Abayomi Shogunle, head of the public complaint rapid response unit (PCRRU), has said that prostitution is a sin under the two major religions practised in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Shogunle made the comment in reaction to criticisms that trailed the detention and conviction of some women who were arrested for alleged prostitution at different locations within the FCT at the weekend.
The ACP via a tweet on his verified Twitter handle @YomiShogunle on Tuesday, April 30, slammed those who condemned the clampdown on the prostitutes, warning that prostitution is a criminal act under the law in Nigeria.
According to him, it has been medically proven that it is responsible for the spread of the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and s*xually transmitted disease (STD).
In reaction, Nigerians asked him if torture is constitutional as well.
Below are some of the reactions:
Nigerians asked him to go after kidnappers first.
What about those patronising them?
A mobile court in Abuja had on Monday, April 29, convicted 27 women for prostitution and sentenced them to one month in prison. The convicts, who were arrested last Wednesday and Thursday, were, however, given an option of N3,000 fine each.
Meanwhile, a concerned social media user recently spoke on behalf of some ladies whom he claimed were arrested and assaulted by officers of the Nigerian Police Force. The man identified as M. M Obono (@martObono), shared the plight of the ladies on Twitter.
According to him, about 70 ladies were reportedly arrested and taken to the Utako police station, following a similar arrest that had taken place on the night of Friday, April 26, in Abuja. He said some of the ladies were arrested for clubbing and some others for prostitution.
