There was confusion in Taraba on Tuesday, April 30, as unknown gunmen reportedly invaded the state's university in Jalingo and kidnapped Sanusi Sa’ad, the deputy registrar for administration.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Samuel Shikaa the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University chapter, confirmed the incident to newsmen in the state.
According to the report, Shikaa said that Sa’ad, who is also the information and protocol officer of the university, was picked from his residence at the university staff quarters at about 1am.
The ASSU chairman said the kidnappers invaded the deputy registrar’s residence through the back side of the university that was not fenced and took him away.
A brother of the victim, Alhaji Kalid Sa’ad, confirmed that the kidnappers had contacted him and demanded for ransom.
He, however, did not mention the amount being demanded. He said he was still negotiating with the kidnappers.
The report said the university branch of ASUU is currently on strike over alleged insecurity of staff resulting from lack of perimeter fencing of the institution, funding and pension for staff, among other issues.
The state commissioner of police, Alkasim Sanusi, had earlier warned kidnappers and other criminals to leave the state, saying the command was determined to root them out.
Legit.ng earlier reported that the recent incident occurred barely 48 hours after an officer of the Nigerian Army was abducted with his wife and two children along Wukari-Ibbi road on Sunday, April 28.
