- Barcelona vs Liverpool's Champions League game will hold on Wednesday, May 1
- The Catalan giants have retained their La Liga title while Liverpool are fighting for the EPL
- Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah will be the two players to look out for at the Camp Nou
Reigning Spanish champions Barcelona will on Wednesday night, May 1, face Premier League giants Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal encounter.
Barcelona last won the tournament in 2015 and will be looking to reclaim the top European honor this year after securing their 26th La Liga title on Saturday, April 27.
Liverpool on the other hand won it last in the 2004/05 season, but they reached the final of the 2017/18 and they were beaten by Spanish side Real Madrid.
These two teams have faced off just a total of eight times throughout their long histories with the Reds holding the current lead between the sides after winning three and drawing two of the matches played.
However, Barcelona and Liverpool are considered as two of the strongest teams in the world, and we take a look at some points.
1. Premier League/La Liga standings
Liverpool have been impressive this season in the Premier League as they are the only side with only one defeat so far with two games to end the season.
Jurgen Klopp's men are still fighting to win the Premier League title with serious competition from Manchester City.
Barcelona on the other hand are already champions of Spain with three games to end the 2018/19 La Liga season.
2. Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah factor
Barcelona captain Lionel Messi and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah are two of the best players every club will want to have in their team.
These two players will be the center of attraction when Barcelona host Liverpool on Wednesday night, May 1.
3. Good investment
This is one thing Barcelona and Liverpool must be given kudos for because they spend money wisely.
These two teams make good investment on players and an example is how Barcelona bought Neymar, nurtured him and sold him to PSG for world record amount.
Liverpool also made good money when they sold the duo of Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho to the Catalan giants. They also spent wisely to sign Van Dijk who recently won the PFA players' player of the year.
4. Virgil van Dijk vs Gerard Pique
These two players are regarded as the best defenders presently in the world considering their performances so far for their clubs.
Gerard Pique has won the World Cup, European Championship, La Liga, Premier League and Champions League trophies amongst others, but Virgil van Dijk is already rated more highly than him and can become even better.
5. Fabinho vs Sergio Busquets
Liverpool star Fabinho has proven himself to be a top-class midfielder this season, but Busquets has been performing that role with great distinction for a number of years. Even though the Brazilian isn't as good right now.
Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Barcelona striker Luiz Suarez confirmed his readiness to celebrate if he scores against Liverpool in the 2018/19 Champions League semifinal clash.
Luis Suarez will be making a return to Anfield for the first time since he left the club five years ago for the Spanish giants.
Liverpool are looking to go one better after finishing runners up to Real Madrid in last season's Champions League final, while Barcelona are seeking a first final appearance since 2015.
