Josef Sural, Czech Republic international, has been reported dead after Alanyaspor’s team minibus crashed while returning from an away game with players on board.
According to the Turkish side on Twitter, the 28-year-old striker Sural, gave up the ghost at the hospital after seven of the squad members, including England star Steven Caulker and Papiss Cisse, were rushed to the hospital after the accident.
Interestingly, Sural was left on the substitute bench all 90 minutes during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Kayserispor, in which Caulker netted Alanyaspor’s goal.
Moments after the match, the VIP minibus rented by the seven players, departed from Kayseri, but after about 5 km away from the match venue - Alanya, they suffered the crash.
The report revealed that other squad members and staff had returned with the other team bus or on their own
According to Alanyaspor's chairman Hasan Çavuşoğlu, quoting police sources, the bus crash was caused as a result of the two bus drivers falling asleep during the return trip.
“According to information I received from our police chief, despite there being two drivers on the vehicle, they were both asleep," Çavuşoğlu said, according to Anadolu.
"The crash happened as a result of them both being asleep.”
Šural, who earned 20 caps for Czech Republic, was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent a surgery, but could not be saved by doctors.
The pair of Caulker and Cisse picked up minor injuries.
Sural joined Alanyaspor from Sparta Prague for a nominal fee in January.
He previously plied his trade with Slovan Liberec and FC Brno
Meanwhile, the report suggest the drivers have been detained following the accident and a probe into the incident have commenced.
Šural, who won 20 caps for his country and scored once, was rushed to a nearby hospital and immediately taken for an operation, but could not be saved by doctors.
