This bill cannot scale through - TUC braces up against life pension for Nigerian lawmakers

- The Trade Union Congress (TUC) sayd the life pension approved by Bayelsan lawmakers for themselves is wickedness to their people

- The TUC laments that politicians in the country have turned Nigeria into a subject of laughter because of acts like this

- The labour union warns that it is prepared to fight against politicians in favour of the masses

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Sunday, April 28, described the life pension bill recently passed by the members of the Bayelsa House of Assembly for themselves as the height of politician’s inhuman acts against the people.

The TUC, in a statement personally signed by Bobboi Bala Kaigama, its president, and Musa-Lawal Ozidi, its secretary general, said the obnoxious bill which started with some states years ago, is expanding as it is being adopted by others.

In the statement made available to Legit.ng, the TUC wondered who actually bewitched Nigerian politicians to make them think of themselves alone.

It was learnt that the new bill would repeal the existing pensions for governor and deputy governor law of 2003 of Bayelsa state if passed.

“The TUC sees this development as an insult and a deliberate attempt to widen the scope of fraudulent activities by politicians in the state. This is the peak of irresponsibility that cannot be allowed to persist whether the bill is given expedited passage on the floor of the House or not.

“Last week we read in the dailies that Nigeria is owing almost N24 trillion. Also, if we go by the statement of the federal government recently, they may still borrow more. It is ridiculous to borrow for recurrent expenditure.

“Who has bewitched our politicians that they hardly get anything right? How could they come up with such at a time the retirees who have served the country for 35 years are dying at verification centres?” The TUC asked.

The labour union noted that many of the retirees in the country cannot even afford drugs to take care of their age-related sicknesses.

"Yet politicians who served for just four years are placing themselves on life pension. It is obvious there is no milk of kindness left in these people,” The TUC said.

The body called on the Bayelsa state legislature and states nursing such idea to drop it as the labour union is prepared to fight for good governance and accountability henceforth.

“It is disgraceful that our country has become a laughing stock in the international community because of things like this. We must change the narrative,” it stressed.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the All Progressive Congress (APC) recently described the approval of bill seeking for the payment of life pension to members of Bayelsa state House of Assembly as ungodly and self-serving.

The Bayelsa chapter of the ruling party, through a statement by publicity secretary, Doifie Buokoribo, accused the state lawmakers of making attempt to enhance their own lives at the expense of the vast majority of Bayelsa people living in pain and penury.
