Kano state in Nigeria recently conferred a chieftaincy title on a Chinese trader, Mike Zhang, BBC Africa reports.
This was done to strengthen the relationship between the people of Kano and the Chinese traders in the state.

Zhang who spoke the Hausa language vowed to strengthen the relationship between his people and the people of Kano.
He said: "I will work towards strengthening the relationship between the people of Kano and the people of our country, China."
The title of Wakilin Yan China which means leader of the Chinese residents was bestowed on Zhang as he was decorated with a turban and robes.
Zhang is also to attend meetings at the Emir’s palace and also participate in the traditional horse riding festival known as Durbar, if he wishes.
According to BBC Africa, a member of the Kano Emirate explained that “the emirate needs a liaison officer to solve conflicts that emanate from business transactions between Chinese and Kano traders".
The turbaning Mike Zhang took place on April 25, 2019, at the Emir’s palace in Kano state.
