48 ABU students receive N4.8 million Chinese scholarship

Hundred thousand naira each has been given to 48 selected students of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) by the Chinese government as assistance to their educational pursuit.

According to Daily Trust, the gesture was part of the Nigeria-China educational collaboration tagged ‘October 1st Scholarship for China-Nigeria Friendship’.

Legit.ng gathers that the deputy Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, Zhao Yong, spoke on behalf of the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Pingjiang.

He said the award was the second one by the Chinese embassy to selected “intelligent students of ABU".

The envoy said: “ABU, as one of the best universities in Nigeria, has a long standing relationship with China. Apart from scholarship award, China has commissioned a new language laboratory at ABU. Since the enlistment of diplomatic ties in 1971 between China and Nigeria, the friendship and cooperation have delivered tangible benefits to the two nations.

“In terms of investment, the accumulated China non-financial investment in Nigeria approaches $2.8 billion, contributing significantly to local economy and job creation.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that full scholarship up to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level was awarded to three young scientists who came top at the 2018 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award Competition, by the federal government.

The announcement was made by President Muhammadu Buhari while declaring open the Technology and Innovation Expo 2019 in Enugu, Enugu state.

The president, who was represented by the secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, commended the creativity and competitive spirit of the successful candidates - Okeke Favour Obianuju from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Fafemi Fisayo Daniel from Kwara state and Joshua John Mark from Akwa Ibom state, who emerged first, second and third respectively.

He said: “The future of Nigerians belongs to our youths and it behoves on government to create the enabling environment for them to develop to their fullest potential. We will harness their energy and their talents to make Nigeria achieve true greatness."
