Jorge Sampoli claims Lionel Messi suffers a lot when playing for Argentina

Jorge Sampaoli, Argentina's Russia 2018 World Cup coach revealed that Lionel Messi "suffers a lot" when he wears his national colors because he cannot show the world how good he is.

Sampaoli who currently coaches Brazilian league side Santos, made the comments during the “We Are Football 2019 - Coaches and Tactics” conference organised by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The former Sevilla boss talked about Argentina’s failure at the World Cup last year and Messi’s performances with the national team, he said: “I coached the best player in the world, I don’t [know] if he’s the best in history, because he now has more than 600 goals in Europe, he’s broken all the records, but he arrives in his country and he’s criticised.

“Beyond his ability, he’s a human being, Argentinians struggle to enjoy Messi as Barcelona fans enjoy him.

"The boy suffers a lot, from what I’ve gone through, he suffers that reality a lot. He cannot show the world all that he is when plays for Argentina. (Argentine) society enjoys destroying things much more than it enjoys success.”

The ex-Chilean coach also spoke about Argentina’s failure at the World Cup under his management, Sampaoli said: “Being the coach of a South American national team is almost impossible because the best players in our teams are in Europe and we cannot speak to them for the necessary amount of time.

"We only have them for very little time to instil the values that we want and our playing philosophy.”

The Albiceleste were knocked out of the tournament by eventual winners France in the round of 16 after scraping through their group.

Messi has scored 65 goals in 129 matches for the South American nation but has never won a major trophy despite reaching the 2014 World Cup final and three Copa America finals.
