Barcelona are edging closer to a successful defence of their La Liga tile after beating Deportivo Alaves 2-0 on Tuesday, April 23, at Mendizorrotza Stadium.

The encounter saw the La Liga leaders start some squad members like Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba from the bench.

Luis Suarez came close to netting the opener after five minutes, but Fernando Pacheco was spot on to make a save from Phillipe Coutinho’s effort from the rebound.

In the 28th minute, Barcelona had another scoring opportunity, but Pacheco dived side-ways to stop Suarez strike from hitting target.

With five minutes to the end of the first half, Alaves had a glorious first chance to put Barcelona on the back foot, but Rodrigo Ely headed effort could only find the roof of the net as sores remained goalless going into the break.

Ahead of the restart, Alaves were forced to make a substitution as a result of injury saw Diego Rolan replace Darko Brasanac, who suffered what looked like a hamstring strain.

Six minutes after the commencement of hostilities in the second half, Barca were lucky not to have conceded the first goal of the match, after shot-stopper Marc Andre Ter Stegen pushed off Ruben Duarte’s curler away from danger.

However, in the 54 minute, the Catalans giants netted the opening goal of the match through Carles Alena’s curled effort that Pacheco failed to save.

Four minutes after the opening goal, Alaves conceded a penalty which was spotted by the VAR inside the penalty box.

Suarez took responsibility and showed composure to fire the ball beyond the reach of Pacheco to double Barcelona’s lead.

With about 30 minute left on the clock, Barca manager Ernesto Valverde replaced Ousmane Dembele with Messi, and on the 70th minute mark he brought in Alba for Nelson Semedo.

but in the closing moments of the game Arturo Vidal missed a chance off a header to further increase Barca’s advantage.

At the end of the match the scoreboard read Deportivo Alaves 0 - 2 Barcelona.

A performance that sees Barcelona at the summit of La Liga log with 80 points, needing just one more point from their next game to defend their title, with second-placed Atletico Madrid on 68 points after 34 matches.

Alaves are currently ninth on the log with 49 points from 34 games.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Barcelona recorded their 23rd win in 33 La Liga matches after beating Real Sociedad 2-1 at Camp Nou.

Real Sociedad dominated the first half but could not make their opportunities count against the side that dispatched Manchester United in the Champions League in midweek.

Barcelona went ahead just before half time after Ousmane Dembele's corner was perfectly headed home by Clement Lenglet to make it 1-0.
