- The proposed plan to establish a private university to be named after President Muhammadu Buhari has been criticised by ASUU
- ASUU said the plan was wrong and an indication that the county's leadership does not believe in public funded education
- Recall that the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, had recently announced her plan to establish a private university to be named after her husband
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday, April 23, faulted the proposed plan to establish a private university which will be named after President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the union, the plan is a disaster. This was disclosed by Professor Deji Omole, chairman of the union, University of Ibadan chapter. Omole's arguments was also backed by Professor Ademola Aremu, a former national treasurer of the Union, Daily Trust reports.
Recall that Aisha Buhari had over the weekend at a Town hall meeting in Yola announced her plan to establish a private university to be named after President Buhari.
“When I heard about the proposed private university to be named after Mr President, I just looked at it as a joke taken too far. If we have a president in a country that has simply refused to fund public education and all we get from the first family is to establish a private university in collaboration with some foreigners, it is a disaster for this country and for a sitting president.
“The implication is that Nigerians should know that this leadership does not believe in public funded education,” Omole said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Aisha Buhari, met with wives of state governors and some security experts.
The meeting was called in a bid to contributing the women’s quota to addressing the spate of kidnapping, banditry and other manifestations of insecurity in the country.
