- The senior lawmaker argues that the north west should be given the positions of deputy speaker and majority leader
The All Progressives Congress (APC) may have decided to adopt a strategy from the eighth National Assembly in order to favour Femi Gbajabiamila as the next speaker of the House of Representatives.
Legit.ng learnt that this disclosure was made by the chief whip of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Duguwa, who said the APC would not want a repeat of what happened in the eighth session of the National Assembly.
Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who won his seat a fourth time and said he wanted to be the majority leader of the House, said: “It is apparent that the party is considering the original zoning formula suggested in the eighth Assembly, which had at that time Femi Gbajabiamila from south west as speaker, MT Monguno as deputy speaker while my humble self as majority leader.”
The Nation reports Duguwa as arguing that the north west got the highest number of elected members at the lower legislative chambers, adding that as a result, the ninth House of Representatives should give the region the position of the deputy speaker as well as the majority leader.
“The public accountability is not the same as profit margin, because there are different forces involved which must be understood and improve if we must serve the public better.
“I as Honorable Ado Duguwa today I understand the public service delivery and quality of life and economic fortunes of Nigerians are directly at stake as such as a leading figure I will encouraged and ensure a more collaborative relations with the executive arm to enrich equatable as well as efficient outcomes,” he said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that a northern group, the Arewa Youth Awareness Forum (AYAF), opposed the decision of the APC to adopt Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker for the incoming 9th National Assembly.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, April 20, the group said the endorsement was against the collective interest of the north ahead of 2023 presidency.
