Police arrest 25 over attacks on Ogun lawmaker’s office

- Ogun police command has arrested 25 people suspected to be attackers of the campaign offices of the state deputy governor and a lawmaker

- The command PRO, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspects have confessed to be members of a cult group

- Oyeyemi also said since the clash between police and thugs, an officer is reportedly missing while one person was killed

Not less than 25 suspects have been arrested by the operatives of the Nigerian Police Force in connection with the attack on the campaign office of Ogun lawmaker, Olakunle Oluomo, in Ifo and the state deputy governor.

The Ogun police command, through a statement by its public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspects were nabbed after the attack on the lawmaker's office and the office of the deputy speaker, Yetunde Onanuga.

Oyeyemi, in a statement on Monday, April 22, said during the attack, one person identified as Akeem was killed by the thugs while an officer of the force remained missing.

He added that the whereabouts of the missing officer is still unknown, though effort has been put in place to arrest the situation.

He said: “Now, a police inspector is missing. The police inspector was macheted during the mob attack and up till now, his whereabouts is unknown. That gave the credence that they were attacked.

"That suspect mentioned another person, that he was part of the notorious cult group which they all belonged to. It was that one that was taken to Ifo to identify the suspect and they have successfully arrested him."

The command PRO also said the officers, on their way back from Ifo, were attacked by the suspected thugs, adding that one person died as a result of stray bullet hit.

On the attack on the office of the state deputy speaker, Oyeyemi said the thugs invaded the office of the lawmaker and set five buses ablaze.

He, however, said the 25 hoodlums have been apprehended and handed to the department of criminal investigation where they will be properly prosecuted and made to bear the consequence of their actions.

He added: "Some people mobilised themselves and attacked the office of the Deputy Speaker, burnt down the office and five vehicles in that area. The correlation between the incident that happened and the reaction of the people is what we cannot establish. There is no nexus between the two (attacks).

“For now, we have arrested 25 suspects. The issues are two: the case of murder and arson. The case of arson is what the people have committed. That act is pure criminal(ity), there is nothing that warrants the spontaneous action.

“Those 25 suspects have been handed over to the State Criminal and Investigation Department. They are going to be screened, those who are not directly involved will be released and those who are directly involved are going to face the law."
