The Ghana Police Service has declared three Nigerians wanted over the alleged kidnap of the Consular – General and Head of Mission of Estonia to the West African country.
Popular Accra-based radio station Starr FM reported that police rescued the 61-year-old foreign envoy after he was reportedly kidnapped in the early hours of Thursday, April 18 while on his regular morning walk in the nation's capital city Accra.
According to the report, the diplomat was rescued on Friday, April 19 by a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team following a tip off.
Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Efia Tenge, said in a statement: “The Charlie SWAT Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command picked up intelligence that some Nigerians residing in H/N/11/B, NTHC Estates, Vivian Farms, Lashibi, were suspicious characters who stay home all day but go out only at night.
"Today 18/04/19 at 0800 hours, Police followed up on the intelligence and located the house. Attempts by police to enter the house was met with resistance from the occupants."
The police said the Nigerians escaped after jumping over the fence but the diplomat who had been kept in the house since his abduction was rescued unhurt.
"In the process all 3 occupants scaled over a fence wall at the back and escaped. Whiles police were still at the scene, victim Hon Nabil Makram Basbous, 61years, a Lebanese / Consular General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana came out from one of the rooms in the house.
"He narrated to police that he lives at Labone near Wangara. That today 18/04/19 at about 0700hours, he went out for a walk within his neighbourhood.”
The diplomat told police that he was picked up during his walk by the Nigerians in a white Hyundai Elantra private car that pulled up in front of him about 10 minutes into his exercise.
"One of the occupants came out, pulled a pistol on him and ordered him to enter the car or risk being shot if he resists. He obliged, entered and was driven away with the kidnappers pointing a pistol and an axe at him," the report said.
The Ghana Police said a search of the said car which was found packed in the compound turned up a Retay brand Pistol loaded with 5 rounds of 7.65mm ammunition and 2 axes.
Meanwhile, in Nigeria, Legit.ng reported that killers of a Briton, Faye Mooney, who was a staff member of Mercy Corps Nigeria, in Kaduna state have demanded N60 million ransom for kidnapped three workers.
The three workers were abducted on Friday, April 21 at a resort centre in Kujuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
It was reported that five persons were abducted but two escaped.
