Fifteen local government chairmen have been suspended indefinitely by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Thursday, April 18, and signed by its state secretary, Samuel Okpoko, the party said the decision to suspend the chairmen was reached at the party’s emergency state executive council meeting, Leadership reports.
The statement read: “The State Executive Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in an emergency meeting on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at the party secretariat approved the indefinite suspension of 15 local government party chairmen.
“All suspended local government party chairmen are hereby requested to handover all party property in their possession to their deputies.”
The party chairmen affected are those of Abua/Odual, Ahoada-East, Ahoada-West, Akuku-Toru, Andoni, Bonny and Degema local government areas.
Others are; Eleme, Emohua, Khana, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Okrika, Omuma, Opobo/Nkoro and Oyigbo local government areas of the state.
This is coming less than 12 hours after the state governor, Nyesom Wike, announced the suspension of chairmen of 12 local government councils in the state.
The chairmen's suspension was announced in a short statement by Simeon Nwakaudu, Wike’s special assistant on electronic media. Nwakaudu said the affected council chairmen were suspended for failure to participate in an official function.
According to the statement, the suspended council chairmen were those of Okrika; Emohua; Abua/Odual; Degema; Khana and Gokana local government areas (LGAs). Others include: Ahoada east; Ikwerre; Eleme; Andoni; Omuma; and Ogu/Bolo LGAs.
