Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has apologised to his teammates following his poor performance in their Champions League defeat to Barcelona this week.

Two first half goals from Lionel Messi and one from Philippe Coutinho in the second half saw the Red Devils crash out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage.

UK Metro quoting SunSport however report that the shot-stopper was angry at himself for the average performance in the match of that magnitude.

The Catalans progressed to the semifinal of the tournament 4-0 on aggregate having claimed 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the reversse fixture.

De Gea's horror show is now said to have forced him to apologise to his team-mates in the dressing room moments after the match.

The shot-stopper reportedly blamed himself for his side's defeat, and even asserted United had a chance to qualify for the next round of the tournament were if not for his mistakes.

None of his team-mates blamed De Gea for the loss, with club manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, lauding the goalkeeper for making countless saves through the match.

"That’s unfortunate with goalkeepers. When you make an error it can get highlighted and that’ll be remembered tonight," he said.

"But he made some fantastic saves as well, which all in all, his contribution to the team is good but sometimes that happens in football," he added.

Following their ouster from the European competition, the Red Devils will now focus on a top four finish in the Premier League at the end of the season.
