The Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo has been upgraded to a full-fledged university by the governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.
According to Daily Trust, the institution will now be known as Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo.

Legit.ng gathers that an implementation committee was also inaugurated by the governor.
The committee, headed by Prof Chima Iwuchukwu, will oversee the immediate take off of the six universities, four polytechnics and two colleges of education established by his administration.
Speaking at the Sam Mbakwe Council chambers during the inauguration of the committee, the governor said he is bequeathing a sound education legacy for Imolites, which was propelled by his administration’s well articulated free education policy.
He said the state House of Assembly had passed the laws establishing the institutions; pointing out that the state now has six universities, up from just one.
Okorocha asserted that thousands of youths had been taken off the street as a result of his free education policy, leading to a drastic reduction in crime and criminal related activities.
According to the governor, “education remains the biggest industry in Imo state.”

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that Governor Rochas Okorocha announced the establishment of six new tertiary institutions as he met with journalists in Owerri, adding that the step was part of plans to revolutionize education in the state.
The new institutions include the University of Engineering, Onuimo, University of Agriculture, Aboh Mbaise, Ihitte Uboma College of Education and Ehime Polytechnic.
