Speakership: Hon. Dyegh ignores APC, declares interest

- Honorable John Dyegh has declared his ambition to run for the Speakership seat in the incoming 9th National Assembly

- Dyegh, a PhD holder from Benue state, is a second term lawmaker on the platform of the APC

- His declaration comes barely 24 hours after the APC endorsed Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila for the position

Honorable John Dyegh, a lawmaker from Benue state, on Wednesday, April 17, declared his ambition to run for the Speakership seat in the incoming 9th National Assembly.

Dyegh, a PhD holder, is a second term lawmaker on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His declaration comes barely 24 hours after the APC endorsed Majority Leader, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila for the position.

In his declaration speech, Dyegh said the north-central geopolitical zone had been marginalised in the leadership of the House since 1999.

He, however, acknowledged his loyalty to the APC, but noted that his region was neither convinced nor given reasons as to why the position should be ceded to the south-west that had already produced the vice president.

His words: “I hereby declare my intention to vie for the position of Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives. The decision is based on my unyielding faith in a united and prosperous Nigeria.

“My party, the APC zoned the position to the south-west. My loyalty to the APC is 100 percent; however, the north-central zone has not been convinced nor given reasons why the position should be zoned to the south-west that already occupies the position of vice president,.

“We are therefore appealing to the party to have a rethink and rezone the Speakership to the north-central for justice and fair play. We pray to God Almighty to touch the hearts of our leaders to reconsider us favourably.

“As citizens, we all have equal stakes in the project Nigeria, and it is against this background that the “House Project for Harmony” emerged.

“I therefore, stand before you today, my colleagues and dear country men to declare publicly my humble and sincere intention to vie for the position of the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives.

“I am ready to offer my time and talents, and make sacrifices for the good of every Nigerian. The decision to join this race is based on my unyielding faith in a united and prosperous Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, Yekini Nabena recently called on the party’s leadership to ensure that the zoning arrangement for the incoming 9th National Assembly reflects the remaining four geopolitical regions of the country.

Nabena made the commendation with emphasis on the fact that the president and the vice president are from the north-west and south-west respectively.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, April 16, Nabena warned that if the party does not get it right now, 2023 elections might turn out to be a free fall all in the ruling party.
