Two Lionel Messi goals and another from Philippe Coutinho ended 3-0 and a 4-0 on aggregate scoreline.

Both David De Gea and Ashley Young defensive blunders added to the Red Devils' downfall that led to both goals scored by Messi.

United will now concentrate on finishing in the Premier League top four to qualify into the Champions League group stages next season.

Solskjaer's men are two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in sixth with five games left to play as they visit Goodison Park to play Everton at the weekend.

The Norwegian boss admitted he has a huge job on his hands after losing five games in his last seven matches.

But Jesse Lingard is already optimistic as he believes Man United will play in next season's Champions League.

He told BT Sport: "The Champions League is a big competition and we'll be fighting to get back in. We’ve got a big week ahead."

Lingard, 26, added: "I thought we dominated in the first 15 minutes.

"We had a couple of chances and the game could have gone differently if we'd put them away.

"That's football. Chances in these big games are massive and if we take them it's a different game.

"We were always going to be underdogs coming into the game, but we had to back ourselves and believe and, like I said, for the first 15 minutes if it had gone our way it would have been a different game."

Lingard also commented about Messi's brilliant display: "He's one of the best players in the world and he's brought his A-game tonight. All we can do now is move on."
