Fresh casualties have reportedly been recorded in the raging communal clashes between the Tiv and Jukun population in the north central part of Nigeria.

Premium Times reported on Saturday, April 13 that many were feared dead as the two tribes clashed again in Wukari, south of Taraba state.

According to the report, residents have fled the area following fighting that has led to the burning of houses and injuries to several people.

The latest attack was said to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Chonku where alleged Tiv ethnic militias fired sporadically and burned down people’s homes.

“They attacked four of our communities in the last three days and as I am talking to you, corpses of 15 people killed by Tiv militias have been deposited in Wukari and we have compiled their names,” a native said confirming the attacks.

But the Tivs have rejected the claims saying the attacks were actually carried out by the Jukuns. According to them, many Tivs have abandoned their homes in Taraba and fled to neighbouring Benue state.

Police spokesman in Taraba state, David Misal, said while the situation is now being handled after the early morning attacks, he could however not confirm number of casualties at press time.

Legit.ng had reported earlier that no fewer than 15 bodies were reportedly recovered on Thursday, April 11, at Vaase settlement in Ukum local government area of Benue state as communal clashes between Jukun and Tiv communities in the state and Taraba continued.

The bodies were recovered following the razing of over 100 houses in the clashes in both sides of the divide.
