- APC chieftain, Dr Umar Duhu is of the opinion that the three senators contesting for the Senate presidency seat are qualified
- Duhu, a pioneer national vice chairman of the APC in the north-east, is more concerned with the conduct of the APC national leadership
- He said there is no way the party can take hold of its members when it did not play a greater role in ensuring their election
The pioneer national vice chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the north-east, Dr. Umar Duhu, has stated that all the contestants for the Senate presidency seat are qualified for the position.
Duhu who stated this during an interview with Leadership newspaper, said Senators Ali Ndume and Ahmad Lawan are from the same bloc of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), are both qualified to occupy the seat.
He is also said despite Senator Danjuma Goje being from another bloc, the former governor of Gombe state is also qualified to be Senate president.
He, however, expressed reservations with the way and manner the APC leadership is treating some of its members, stressing that there is no way the party can take hold of its members when it did not play a greater role in ensuring their election.
His words: “You do not also expect an elected senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who paid through his nose to be candidate of the party and spent heavily to get elected to easily chicken in to obey a party whose leadership talks from both sides of their mouths.
“I do not see any directive handed over to the elected legislators working, rather, the party must go begging and apologising to Nigerians for must of their lapses to get the party working again.”
“Unless the APC as a party, purges itself of disloyal and self seeking members that shamelessly worked against the interest of APC at all levels during the 2019 general election, no right thinking Nigerian will take the directives of the leadership seriously. I will not also be surprised when a repeat of the 8th assembly comes to the fore.”
Speaking on the contestants, he said. “Both senators, Ahmed Lawal and Ali Ndume are of the same constituency, the defunct ANPP while Senator Danjuma Goje is from a different block.
“In terms of qualifications, all of them are qualified to take the 9th Senate to the next level.”
Meanwhile, a former minister of sport, Bala Ka’oje, has faulted the endorsement of certain individuals for leadership positions by the APC ahead of the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.
The APC chieftain stated that the ruling party ought to have zoned the positions to regions and not to individuals, warning the national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole that he can appoint leaders of the National Assembly.
