The allegation by the opposition that the Plateau state government diverted N20 billion meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state has been denied by the state government.
The state commissioner of budget and economic planning, Sylvester Wallangko, made the denial during the 2019 budget breakdown at the ministry's conference hall of the cabinet office, The Guardian reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the commissioner said the state runs a responsible and accountable government, adding that it would be callous to divert funds meant for IDPs.
He said: “Opposition is not correct. If something like that happened, we would declare it. N20 billion is a huge sum of money that could not be paid secretly. So, the allegation is baseless. If N20 billion comes in, it will be made public. Those who are making the allegation should think twice."
According to the breakdown of the budget which has a size of N153.5 billion, N68 billion (44.33%) is for capital projects, while N85.4 billion (55.37%) is for recurrent expenditure.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau state, General Jeremiah Useni (rtd), alleged that Governor Simon Lalong used the N20 billion support fund for rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to prosecute his re-election into office.
Useni, a former minister of the FCT and current senator representing Plateau South senatorial district in the National Assembly, alleged that Governor Lalong deliberately refused to use the fund to rebuild communities that were destroyed during attacks in the state, but diverted the monies for personal use.

He made the allegation while briefing journalists on the forthcoming supplementary election in the state.
Useni said: “We are aware that the governor squandered N20 billion that was meant for rehabilitation of IDPs to their ancestral homes to prosecute his re-election into office. Lalong would have to account for such money at the appropriate time."
