Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been seeded in Pot 1 ahead of the official draw of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt on Friday, April 12, in Cairo.
According to a statement on CAF official website on Thursday, April 11, the latest FIFA ranking released on April 4, played a huge role in placing the Eagles are in pot one as they are currently ranked third in Africa and 42nd in the world.
A further breakdown of the draw ceremony revealed that the body’s Executive Committee has given its nod to the procedure on Thursday, 11 April 2019, in Cairo, Egypt.
“The procedure was proposed by the Organising Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations at its meeting 24-hours earlier.
“The pots and seedings of the 24 qualified teams were decided based on the latest FIFA World rankings (released 4 April 2019), which is globally accepted and portrays a true reflection of the state of the qualified teams.”
Below are the four drawing pots confirmed by the continent’s football governing body CAF:
Pot 1: Egypt (hosts) – Cameroon – Nigeria – Senegal – Tunisia – Morocco
Pot 2: DR Congo – Ghana – Mali – Ivory Coast – Guinea – Algeria
Pot 3: South Africa – Uganda – Benin – Mauritania – Madagascar – Kenya
Pot 4: Zimbabwe – Namibia – Guinea Bissau – Angola – Tanzania – Burundi
Meanwhile, at the end of the draw, six groups with four teams each will emerge, with one from each drawing pot, will be drawn.
Meaning that the Eagles cannot draw any of Egypt (hosts), Cameroon, Senegal, Tunisia or Morocco.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Super Eagles of Nigeria have been seeded in Pot 2 ahead of the official draw ceremony of the Total Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2019.
A further breakdown of the draw ceremony billed for Friday, April 12 in Cairo, Egypt revealed that five other countries - Morocco, Congo DR, Guinea, Mali and Algeria are in Pot 2 with Nigeria and will not face one another in the group stage of the 2019 AFCON.
