Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, chairman of the northern senators forum has refuted reports where he was quoted to have said that 82 senators are backing Senator Ahmed Lawan’s aspiration to become president of the Senate.
This was disclosed in a statement in Sokoto by Wamakko's special adviser on media, Bashir Mani.
According to the statement, Senator Wamakko, who represents Sokoto North senatorial district, was erroneously quoted.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the spokesperson of the Senate, Senator Abdullahi Sabi, expressed optimism that his colleague, Lawan, would clinch two third votes to emerge as the president of the upper chamber.
Sabi, who gave the assurance while briefing newsmen on Wednesday, April 10, in Abuja, said with the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) nod and assurances from the senators-elect across party lines, Lawan would emerge winner, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Senator Sabi (APC-Niger), who won his re-election to the 9th Senate, said negotiations are already on to garner support for Lawan to emerge president of the Senate.
