- Diego Costa has been banned for eight matches after insulting La Liga referee
- The 30-year-old spent just 28th minute in his side's 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou
- Costa has a chance to appeal the punishment or miss the rest of the matches for the season
Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been handed an eight-match ban after insulting Jesus Gil Manzano in his side's 2-0 defeat to Barcelona last weekend.
The 30-year-old former Chelsea striker was sent off for dissent in the 28th minute of the encounter at Camp Nou.
Two late second half goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez ensured the Catalans stretch their lead on the table
But the victory did not come without its usual drama from both teams with seven yellow cards and one red dished out by the referee at the end of the meeting.
Costa was handed four games ban for grabbing the referee, while the remaining four came as a results of the insults he heaped on the referee according to Squawka news.
With his eight match ban, the striker will miss Atletico's remaining Spanish League fixtures this campaign.
According to BBC, Costa has a chance to appeal the punishment.
"I asked the referee and he told me Costa said something to him," Atletico manager Diego Simeone said after the game.
"Other players have said things and not been sent off but that does not justify what Costa did."
As it stands, Atletico are currently 11 points behind league leaders Barcelona in second place, with seven games remaining.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Diego Costa could sit out the rest of the season for saying terrible things about referee Jesus Gil Manzano's mother during Atletico Madrid's loss to Barcelona.
The Spanish striker reacted rudely after Manzano ignored to award him a free kick when he was tackled by Barca's Arthur Melo.
Costa's action earned him a red card for dissent in the 27th minute and Diego Simone's men finished the match with ten-men.
