Zamfara killings: Nigeria police seal mining locations in Kano

- The Nigeria Police Force has ordered immediate suspension of mining activities in Kano state

- The commissioner of police in the state, Mohammad Wakili, said the directive was to contain security threats

- The command has since deployed a special police unit to enforce strict compliance

The Kano police command has ordered immediate suspension of mining activities in Sumaila council area of the state.

The commissioner of police in the state, Mohammad Wakili, said the directive was to contain security threats.

DSP Abdullahi Haruna, the police public relations officer, disclosed in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, April 10, in Kano.

Consequently, the command has since deployed a special police unit to enforce strict compliance.

Part of the statement read: “In compliance with the federal government of Nigeria’s resolution to suspend mining activities in some parts of the country due to security reasons, the Kano state police command has visited Rimi mining site in Sumaila LGA to enforce the suspension. Adequate deployment of policemen was already made at the site to ensure compliance.”

The police however advised the general public to comply with the order pending further considerations by the federal government, adding that “members of the public are enjoined to keep off.”

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Mohammad, had on Monday, April 8, issued a vacation order to foreign miners in Zamfara following the killings by armed bandits in the state.

According to the IGP, the move is part of the federal government's effort to bring back peace to the state troubled by violence that has claimed the lives of many persons.

Recent violence and killings in the state was said to have been fuelled by the mining of gold and lead.
