- Lionel Messi says his header against Man United in 2009 is one of his favorite goals
- The Argentine football star scored the second goal as Barcelona defeated Man United in Rome
- Messi and his teammates will face the Red Devils on Wednesday night, April 10, in UCL quarterfinal
Lionel Messi has made it clear that his header against Manchester United in the 2009 Champions League final is one of his favorite goals in his career.
The header in Rome sealed Barcelona's Champions League final victory over Sir Alex Ferguson's side and Messi was still talking about it eight years later.
Barcelona had dominated much of the match, but were still only 1-0 up through Samuel Eto'o early strike as the game headed towards the final 20 minutes.
Xavi then hung a cross into the United box, and an unmarked Messi rose to brilliantly head the ball over Edwin van der Sar and loop it into the net.
“It was hard to imagine that I was going to score with my head with Rio Ferdinand standing near me, but I didn’t really have a marker – the ball came into the center and I was there to meet it.
“In the moments that the ball was in the air from Xavi’s cross, I pictured scoring this goal and I thank God it happened.
''It was such an important goal in every sense: for the team, for the way the final was turning in our favor and for me, too. It’s still one of my favorites goals,'' Messi told FourFourTwo.
