Referee handling the Braga vs Benfica youth match on Saturday, April 6, ended the contest 90 seconds before regulation time after a player's mother died in tragic circumstance.

According to reports in Portugal, David Veiga's mother, Sandra Pinto, died in a car crash on her way to attend the match alongside her husband who is said to be in a critical condition.

Veiga was in action for the Braga under 19 team when he received the distressing news, with his manager, Artur Jorge, taking the responsibility to inform match officials.

The referee subsequently blew the final whistle moments before time in a class gesture, as Braga went on to lose 4-2.

Veiga's club has since confirmed the news via their official website, paying tribute to the player and his family.

"SC Braga notes with great regret the death of David Veiga's mother, Sandra Pinto, who was a victim of a road accident when she was heading to the match," the statement said.
"In this terrible hour of pain and consternation, the club is and will be with the player," the statement added.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Nigerian defender Kelechi John has been appreciated in the Primeira Liga as he has been nominated for the Best Player award this season.

Kelechi John currently plays for Rio Ave, and the 20-year-old will now face competition from 22 other players in Portugal for this award.

There will be voting to select the best player among all these stars which will take place on the website of The Professional Football Players' Union (SJPF) according to the report on Futaa. Already, Kelechi John's impressive display for his club has earned him an international invitation with the Nigerian team.
