A report by ThisDay indicates that the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has met with four All Progressives Congress (APC) governors in Abuja to get their support to be the next Senate president ahead of the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.
According to the report, the move is part of Senator Lawan's ongoing consultations with stakeholders in the ruling APC over his interest in the Senate presidency.
It was gathered that Senator Lawan’s meeting with the governors was held on Tuesday, April 2, at the instance of the Yobe state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam, who is a senator-elect.

The meeting, it was learnt, was aimed at drumming support for Senator Lawan’s ambition at the level of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.
The consultative meeting, which took place at a guest house in Aso Drive had in attendance the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state, who is also a senator-elect; Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state and his Adamawa state counterpart, Mohammed Bindow.
Geidam, who is governor of Lawan’s home state, Yobe, was said to have called the meeting to solicit necessary support for the actualisation of the senator’s ambition to lead the 9th Senate.
A source privy to the meeting said Senator Lawan used the forum to solicit the backing of APC governors and by extension the senators-elect in the 22 states controlled by the ruling party for his ambition ahead of the inauguration of the Senate in June.
The source who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the governors had fruitful discussions with Senator Lawan and assured him of their support since he is the choice of the party leadership.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the APC, have been cautioned against subjecting the control of the National Assembly to certain individuals.
This was the position of the senator representing Abia South senatorial district, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who is also a member of the PDP.
Abaribe said the parliament will not sit back and allow anyone impose presiding officers, insisting that only elected senators, who are duly certified, would vote when the time comes.
