A political elder statesman and former Kaduna governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, has expressed sadness over the disheartening rate of kidnapping across the country, adding that leaders lacked the political will to tackle the festering menace.

Reacting to how kidnap activities are getting rampant in the northern part of the country, Musa, who spoke on Thursday, April 4, in Kaduna, attributed the rising figures of kidnapping cases to corruption and yearning for quick money among youths, Daily Trust reports.

According to the elder statesman, the country has not done enough to curb the menace as those engaged in it move freely without fear of penalty.

He said: "First of all, there is no correct political leadership in the country to tackle the problem. Secondly, there is urge to get rich quickly by some people in the country.

"Everybody is trying hard to make money by all means including the leaders. And the way criminals are allowed to go free without any relevant punishment for their crimes is another big problem.

“If not, did we experience kidnapping before, for instance during colonial era and even in first and second Republic? No, we didn’t! But since this corruption and stealing among leaders reached its peaks, we began to have this issue because everybody wants to make money by all means."

Musa also berated the security operatives for aiding arrested suspects escape justice. He added that the more police continue to set criminals free, the more crime rate would be increased.

He added: “A criminal will be arrested by police today and by tomorrow; he will be set free because he bought his way out. Even when they end up in prison, there is another thing they called plea bargaining. All these lead to the problem we are facing in this country."

Meanwhile, previously reported that Balarabe Musa, while speaking about Nigerian system of governance, declared that there were only two types of people that were not corrupt in the country.

Musa also stated that it was very difficult to identify individuals that were not corrupt in countries like Nigeria. ( -> We have updated to serve you better.
