Communal clashes: Hundreds flee Taraba to Benue

- Many people were feared killed in fresh crisis between Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups in Taraba state recently

- Many houses were also burnt down as several persons from both sides of the conflict were confirmed injured

- The clashes has led to hundreds of Tivs fleeing into neighbouring Benue state

A report by Daily Trust indicates that thousands of Tivs refugees affected by the ongoing communal clashes between Tivs and Jukuns in Wukari local government area of Taraba state have crossed to Benue state for safety.

According to the report, Tivs in their hundreds including women and children fled Wukari area into Benue state.

It was gathered that armed Jukun militia invaded Tivs villages along Wukari/Kente/Kwatan Sule road and looted valuables as well as farm produce.

A source in the area who spoke on the condition of anonymity said several Tivs villages were burnt down and occupants chased away.

He, however, said Tivs traditional rulers from Benue state and members of Wukari traditional council and other security agents met yesterday in Wukari to find a solution to the conflict.

The source said their is calm now after both Tivs and Jukun leaders have made appeals, while soldiers and police have taken charge of the area.

The police public relation officer Taraba state command, ASP David Misal said a deputy commissioner of police was drafted to the area to head security operation.

He said soldiers and police are on 24-hour patrol in the troubled area.

Legit.ng had previously reported that Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba on Tuesday, March 12, ordered the extension of the curfew imposed on Jalingo, the capital of the state, from dusk to dawn to 24 hours.
