Manchester United are keen to battle Manchester City to sign Atletico Madrid ace Saul Niguez as a possible replacement for Ander Herrera.

According to UK Express, the Red Devils are ready to beef up their squad in the summer, with a playmaker topping their shopping list during the window.

And ESPN suggests the Red Devils are now ready to seal a switch for Atletico Madrid star Saul, who was previously on the radar of the Old Trafford landlords.

Reports in March suggested Manchester City were closing in on the 24-year-old at the end of the campaign.

But Solskjaer is confident he will have the Spaniard in his squad as he plans to play him alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic next campaign.

And, with Ander Herrera set to leave, United are in the market to sign a replacement.

ESPN claim Man United eggheads are aware that Atletico Madrid star has a €150m clause and club boss Diego Simeone will insists on the Premier League giants paying the full sum.

In addition, City’s interest is another factor worrying United, but Guardiola seems to be eyeing Atletico ace Rodri Hernandez as a preferred option.

However, La Liga expert Guillem Balague disclosed that United had a chance of signing Saul when he was 18, but snubbed the opportunity.

"We have never had a midfielder like this," Balague told the BBC.

"Finally people have realised the talent that this man has.

"As an 18-year-old he was offered to Everton and they said no, as a 20-year-old he was offered to Manchester United and they said no but I think in the next couple of years we will be talking about him as one of the top, if not the top midfielder in Europe.

"He can play in the Simeone style without the ball, quick putting teams under pressure, but also in the Barcelona style if he wanted to, quick with his passes, and of course he has got the physique to come from deep as he did with one of the goals against Croatia.

“You have got everything in one player."

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Paul Pogba has been defended by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his performance in the Red Devils' Premier League defeat against Wolves.

The France international struggled on Tuesday night, April 2, and was unable to save his side from their seventh Premier League defeat this season.
