INEC to present certificates of return to 40 members-elect of Lagos Assembly

- The Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos state says certificates of return will be presented to the 40 members-elect of the state House of Assembly on Friday

- INEC public relations officer, Femi Akinbiyi, says the event will take place at the INEC Lagos office in Sabo Yaba

- According to Akinbiyi, 640 candidates contested the March 9 House of Assembly election and 40 of them were elected

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos state has said it will present certificates of return to the 40 members-elect of the state House of Assembly on Friday, April 5.

The INEC public relations officer, Femi Akinbiyi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Legit.ng notes that Akinbiyi said: “The event will take place at the INEC Lagos office Sabo Yaba at 10 a. m.

“The members were elected among the 640 candidates that contested the March 9th House of Assembly elections."

The 40 seats in the Assembly were won by candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the March 9 governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

INEC had on March 29 presented certificates of return to the Lagos state governor-elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, at the commission’s office in Sabo, Yaba.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state, emerged winner of the governorship election in the state, beating Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 533,304 votes.

For Agbaje, the margin of loss was higher than what he recorded in 2015 when he lost to outgoing governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. He polled 659,738 votes to Ambode’s 812,394 in 2015.

Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University and state returning officer for Lagos governorship election, said that Sanwo-olu polled 739,445 votes to defeat Agbaje who scored 206,141 votes.

The local government areas returning officers presented the results one after the other as they arrived at the collation centre before they were accepted by Ogunbodede.
