Call to increase VAT is insensitive, Obi says as he hails Tinubu’s advice

- Vice presidential candidate of the PDP, Peter Obi, has hailed Bola Tinubu on his position on the proposed increment in VAT

- Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former state Lagos governor and national leader of APC had recently advised the federal government against increasing VAT rate

- Obi who also used the opportunity to blast the ruling APC said increase in VAT in the present economic situation amounted to insensitivity on the part of the government

Peter Obi, the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has praised Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the latter's position on the proposed increment in Value Added Tax (VAT).

Recall that the APC national leader had on Thursday, March 28, at the 11th Bola Tinubu Colloquium held in commemoration of his 67th birthday advised the federal government against increasing VAT rate.

In his reaction Obi, in a statement by his media office described Tinubu’s advice as gratifying and making economic sense given the situation in the country.

According to him, Tinubu’s position was clearly at variance with that of his party, saying it goes to underscore the uncoordinated campaign the APC dished out to Nigerians, The Nation reports.

He insisted that the call for an increase in VAT or other taxes in the present economic situation amounted to insensitivity on the part of the government.

“It is extremely unrealistic for anybody to think of growing the economy and creating jobs by increasing tax. It’s too simplistic an approach,” Obi argued.

Going further, he added that: “Anybody thinking this country will work without tinkering with the political and economic structure is deceiving himself because no nation grows on injustice.”
