- A Federal High Court has ordered INEC to investigate Ifeanyi Ubah and the returning officer for his senatorial district, following criminal allegations leveled against them
- The court directed INEC to conduct investigation into the matter for the purpose of prosecuting the respondents within 14 days
- The court directed that any other person(s) implicated in the investigation should also be prosecuted
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been ordered by a Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra state, to investigate Ifeanyi Ubah, the senator-elect for Anambra South senatorial district, and the returning officer, Prof M.N. Umenweke.
The court gave the order following criminal allegations leveled against both men in the February 23 National Assembly election in the district, Vanguard reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate in the district, Chris Ubah, had applied for an order of mandamus from the court.
In his suit, Ubah urged the court to compel the electoral commission (the first respondent), to undertake the prosecution of the returning officer and the senator-elect, Ubah, who was declared winner on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
Handing the order, the presiding judge, Justice I.B. Gafai, directed INEC to conduct investigation into the matter for the purpose of prosecuting the respondents within 14 days.
The order read: “Upon the honourable court having delivered a considered judgment today, it hereby ordered as follows: The first respondent (INEC) shall within 14 days from today, conduct or cause investigation into the criminal allegations of the applicant (Chris Uba).
“Prosecute, if the investigation result so warrants, the third respondent (Ifeanyi Ubah) and any other person(s) implicated in its investigation.
“Where it considers it inexpedient to prosecute through its legal officers, consider at its liberty, the appointment of the applicant’s solicitors in this suit for the purpose of such prosecution.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that after winning the Anambra South senatorial district election on the platform of the Young Peoples Party (YPP), Ifeanyi Ubah allegedly dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was made public by the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, during a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and APC senators-elect on Monday night, March 25.
