Abuja court sentences fake herbalist 97 years in prison over N5.6m fraud

- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Clement Joseph for defrauding a woman the sum of N5,600,000

- Joseph deceived his victim, Bola Akintola, into believing that untimely death can be averted from her and thus collected the said amount from her

- Following this, a Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by one Justice A.O. Otaluka sentenced Joseph to 97 years in prison

A Federal High Court in Apo, Abuja, presided over by Justice A.O. Otaluka on Wednesday, March 27, sentenced one Clement Joseph, also known as Dr Omale to 97 years imprisonment with no option of fine.

Joseph was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2017 on a seven-count charge, bordering on conspiracy and syphoning the sum of N5,600,000 on the pretence of being able to avert untimely death for one Bola Akintola.

The convict was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on the conspiracy charge and 15 years each on the rest of the six charges, which all amounts to 97 years. Although the jail terms run concurrently, Joseph will serve only 13 years, as he has been in custody for two years.

With the plea of the prosecuting counsel, Elizabeth Alabi granted, Joseph is to make restitution of the said amount to Akintola.

The convict's crime violates Section 8(a) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a young Nigerian man had been sentenced to four months in jail after he was arrested for impersonating a white woman in other to defraud a white man in the United States.

The man identified as Agboola Taiwo had reportedly impersonated a white woman known as Katherine Bishop to defraud an American man simply identified as James. Taiwo had been accused of sending a mail to James under the pretense of being Bishop.
