Winning or losing an election with 300 votes is a recipe for disaster - Fayemi

- Governor Fayemi has noted that elections are becoming tougher in Nigeria

- The Ekiti governor said winning election with 300 votes should not allow the winner take all

- Fayemi suggested a joint government as solution to the problem

Governor Kayode Fayemi has suggested that a joint government be considered a solution in the case where governorship election is won by just 300 votes.

The Cable reports that the governor gave this suggestion on Monday, March 25, at the Africa CEO forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

He noted that elections are becoming more competitive in Nigeria but that a person cannot take all by just winning with 300 votes.

He said: "With recent elections in Nigeria, it is becoming absolutely clear that it is not an either or, it is not whether its PDP or APC, especially when you have margins that are so narrow.

“Elections are becoming more competitive, people are winning elections with 300 votes. We need to be looking in the direction of collective engagement, whether you call that proportional representation or you call it joint government

“Ultimately, you cannot win an election with 300 votes and take all, and the person who loses that election with 300 votes gets nothing, it is a recipe for disaster, and as a country, we need to start looking in another direction."

Over the weekend, Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto state and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared winner of the state gubernatorial election with only 342 votes.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday, March 24, rejected the declaration of Governor Tambuwal as winner of the just-concluded governorship election in the state.
