- The race for who becomes the next Senate president and House of Reps speaker is gathering steam
- Lawmakers from Oyo state are said to be mobilising stakeholders from other zones to ensure it gets the position of speaker
- Meanwhile, a pro-democracy group has urged senators-elect to support the bid of Senator Ahmad Lawan, representing Yobe North
Ahead of the inauguration of the 9th Senate and House of Representatives in June, several lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have indicated their interest to lead the new National Assembly.
APC chieftains and stakeholders from Oyo state and the northeast are lobbying for House of Representatives’ and Senate president’s positions in the 9th National Assembly.
The Nation reports that a member of the party’s NEC from northeast stated that Oyo state’s moves to produce the speaker may have received the backing of some members of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC).
The party chieftain, who craved anonymity, said they are mobilising stakeholders from other zones to ensure Oyo get the position of speaker.
“Obviously, Oyo state has ranking members of the National Assembly that are qualified to compete for any key position and that is why we are moving round to mobilise party stakeholders to support our agitation," the party chieftain said.
In a related development, the Sustainable Democracy Agenda (SUDA), a pro-democracy group, has urged senators-elect to support the bid of Senator Ahmad Lawan, representing Yobe North, for the position of president of the 9th Senate.
The group’s convener, Malam Ibrahim Usman, made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, March 25.
Usman said the move would ensure a united and vibrant senate ready to face the onerous legislative works ahead.
