Just in: Kano’s commissioner of police can’t be trusted - Ganduje alleges

Ahead of the governorship supplementary election in Kano, the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has declared that the commissioner of police, Muhammed Wakili, can no longer be trusted.

Ganduje claimed in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service that Wakil is politically partial.

The governor was quoted by Vanguard as saying during the programme: “I didn’t know him before now but the way he does his job is questionable.

“He has taken and favoured a particular political side, which is uncalled for and translates to mishandling his job.”

According to Ganduje, Wakil has no constitutional right to arrest either the governor or his deputy as he did during the election.

He argued that the action of the police commissioner is an indication of lack of professionalism.

At the time of this report, the police commissioner was yet to react to the allegation by Ganduje, who is currently in a tight governorship race against the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Legit.ng earlier reported how the Kano deputy governor, Nasiru Gawuna, and the state's commissioner for local governments, Murtala Sule Garo, were arrested by the police during the election.

The men were allegedly arrested for attempting to disrupt the collation of result at Nasarawa local government area of the state.

The chairman of Nasarawa local government, Alhaji Lamin Sani was also arrested by the police.

It also reported how Murtala Sule Garo, who doubles as the secretary of the Ganduje campaign organisation, reportedly accused Wakili Muhammad of being unfair to the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Garo alleged that the Kano police commissioner was biased in his actions and unfair to APC, saying “we are not going to take it again because he has not been fair to us.”

Garo made the statement on Friday, March 15, while speaking with newsmen on his recent detention by the police command for allegedly disrupting the collation of the March 9, 2019 governorship election result in Nasarawa local government area.
